When it's cold outside your body has to work harder at staying warm. When you bonk in cold weather it's not just uncomfortable, it's outright dangerous. Blood sugars fuel the body, allowing it to maintain its temperature. Always bring lots of high-energy food, like energy bars (carry them close to your body so you don't break your teeth!) or trail mix. I'm serious when I say that food can mean the difference between life and death in cold temperatures.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water before you go out. Even though you may not feel thirsty in cold weather, it's just as important to stay well hydrated. Drink as much as you can, starting several hours before you ride. Exposed to the elements, water freezes easily in a water bottle cage, and drinking very cold water can lower your body temperature.
