Red River Fault Loop

Great doubletrack riding on a piñon- and juniper-covered mesa near the wild and scenic Red River and Rio Grande. This is one of my favorite areas in the northern part of New Mexico. The Wild Rivers Recreation Area offers up a multitude of outdoor pursuits for those willing to go off the beaten track. There are several excellent hiking trails that lead down to the Rio Grande where there’s beautiful camping and good fishing. The hike up to Guadalupe Mountain travels through stands of beautiful ponderosa pine trees and offers great views to the surrounding mountains and north to Colorado, especially Blanca Peak (14,345 feet) and Little Bear Peak (14,037 feet). The campgrounds are well maintained and rarely, if ever, fill up. The Wild Rivers Recreation Area has five developed campgrounds and picnic areas. Each campground has bathrooms, drinking water, picnic sites, and tables. A fee is charged per vehicle, per night for camping. I suggest that you spend a few days hiking, fishing, or mountain biking in the area. The visitor center has been remodeled and offers several visual displays on geology, fauna, and flora of the area. The staff at the center is very friendly and can answer any questions that you may have and offer things to do while staying in the area. If camping, this is a perfect spot to use as a base while exploring the many activities in this beautiful area of northern New Mexico. Trail surface: Well-groomed doubletrack trail.
