Pinyon and juniper cover these foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. You will be able to see Gallina Peak to the north and east and catch a glimpse up into the Wheeler Peak Wilderness from the ridge before dropping into Gallina Creek Canyon. Gallina Creek Canyon is beautifully edged with cottonwoods and other deciduous trees that provide precious shade on your ride up. The remnants of an old mine can be found in the drainage just below Gallina Peak up the east fork of this road. The west fork ends at the boundary of the Lawrence Ranch, owned by the family of D. H. Lawrence.
