Gallegos Peak via Forest Road 442

Excellent riding on a mostly graded forest road along Apache Canyon and to just below Gallegos Peak (10,528 feet). This is a nice ride for the strong beginner or intermediate rider looking to get back into some beautiful country without a lot of hard riding. Forest Road 442 is a mostly graded road that cuts along Apache Canyon, passes below Gallegos Peak, and eventually winds to the north to join with the Rio Grande del Rancho. The views are beautiful along the road, and wildflowers grow on the steep slopes during the summer months. Trail surface: Dirt roads and doubletrack trails. Mountain Biking Taos Area provided by Bob D'Antonio, "Mountain Biking Northern New Mexico," Falcon Publishing USGS Taos County Moderate. The elevation gain is spread out, and there are only a couple of short, steep climbs. Carson National Forest Ranger Station
