This is simply some of the prettiest country to be found in New Mexico. The loop is in an elk calving ground that usually remains closed until sometime in July. The Forest Service keeps people out of this area during the spring to ensure that the cows are not disturbed or frightened into abandoning their calves while the calves are still nursing and vulnerable to predators. If you keep your voice low and ride in the early morning and evening hours, you have the best chance of catching these regal animals out and about. Views all along this route are great—you’ll probably want to pack along a camera for this one. To the south you can look into the Moreno Valley, behind you is the Valle Vidal. Tetilla Peak is just to the west of you, and Van Diest Peak is a little farther to the north.
